PRESIDENT BHARRAT JAGDEO of Guyana has summoned an emergency meeting of major stakeholders in the wake of the country's second massacre of innocent citizens in just over five weeks. On Sunday night, twenty heavily armed men shot dead in cold blood 13 persons, among them three policemen, in the mining town of Bartica, about 80 miles south of the nation's capital, Georgetown. Still recovering from the shocking massacre of 11 people, including five children, by an armed gang socalled the "The Armed african movement" in the village of Lusignan about eight miles east of Georgetown, villagers woke up on the 17 feb to learn of the carnage in Bartica as security forces continue to struggle with a spiralling crime crisis. Based on eye-witnesses accounts, Divisional Commander of the Guyana Police Force, Gavin Primo, reported that about six gunmen who attacked the police station were dressed in military fatigues and carried assault rifles. In the ensuing shoot-out, three policemen were killed and weapons stolen from the station. Among the ten other murdered victims, five were killed while sleeping in their hammocks.
